Lucy Peterson

Lucy Peterson is a sophomore double-majoring in journalism and political science. Lucy hails from Denver, Colorado, and is currently the news editor of the University Daily Kansan, having worked for the UDK since she first came to KU in 2018.

I chose to major in journalism because I saw the good that it could do. Things like Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein helping survivors of sexual assault tell their stories or Woodward and Bernstein’s uncovering of the corruption in the White House are all examples of journalism being used for the good of the people, and I hope that someday I can help people through my work like these and other reporters have already.

When I graduate I will always remember the friends I’ve made through the J-School — my freshman year roommate, my current roommate, and the wonderful people I’ve met at the Kansan.

If I could give my freshman year self advice I would say don’t be afraid to ask questions in any situation.

My greatest source of joy is my friends. I have met so many people at KU who have helped me grow, and I don’t know where I’d be without a lot of those people.

“What’s past is prologue.” — William Shakespeare. I like this quote because it signifies that everything you’ve done or everything that’s happened to you in the past is only preparing you for what’s to come.
