I want to side with the Associated Press -- I do work for a member news organization, after all -- but I also sympathize deeply with the people that AP is trying to shut down.

I do believe that AP has a right to defend it's own intellectual property. Their reporters went out and found, reported and produced that content and AP paid them good money, but not THAT good of money, to go and get those stories. AP has every right to the money that is made from that content. However, things are never that simple. There is a history of AP showing a lack of understanding toward the basic mechanics of the Internet -- calling simply linking to a story, an act central to the functioning of the Internet, a criminal act of piracy.

My sympathies for the aggregators are few, but meaningful. Aggregators fall into two classes when it comes to other's content: the linkers and the thieves. If an aggregator simply links to an AP story, such as Digg does, then that aggregator is performing a service to AP, namely, distributing it's content to more users and directing them to the AP pages where they can then be served ads. These aggregators are terrific for the source of the original content because they drive up traffic on stories that might have otherwise been overlooked. The thieves are a different matter. These aggregators copy and paste the AP stories, even if they attribute them, without paying AP a royalty. This redirects the money that should have gone to AP into the thief's pocket. As a content originator I despise these sort of aggregators and see no reason why they should be defended.

The difficulty for AP will be, and has been, going after the thieves without alienating the average user who does not draw so stark a distinction as I have drawn here.

The Internet is a vast echo-chamber and AP is making a lot of very loud people very nervous.

Note to classmates:

I am sorry this post did not get up sooner so that you could make your required comments. I spent the weekend with family in Wichita and just checked my email half an hour ago. My apologies.

A friend of mine is a huge Perez Hilton fan. We were surfing through his Website the other day when we noticed a video that he had posted featuring a young girl singing her favorite Taylor Swift song. And not very well, at that.

Youtube has a ridiculous number of videos of kids singing and dancing. In fact, the search "kid singing" yields over 53,000 video results. It's just hard to imagine what possesses a 7-year-old to turn on their big sister's webcam and dance around their room. What's even harder to understand is why they would then post the video to YouTube so that 120,000 people can view it.

While I don't understand the thought process behind these videos, they are definitely entertaining. They evoke quite a range of emotions. Some of them are adorable. Some of them are funny. A lot of them are just plain creepy, like this gem below.

If this is your only foray in the world of Tina Chen, take a few minutes and check out her MySpace. The 17-year-old has covers several other classics like this one and even has some original songs.

Many of the kids on YouTube star in their own videos and upload them themselves (hopefully, without their parents' knowledge.) The other aspect of kid-YouTube-sensations are the videos that parents upload of their kids. These videos generally have less of the creepiness factor, but it's still odd that so many parents are willing to broadcast their kids on the web. What could the thought process be on this one? "Honey, little David is all drugged up from his dentist visit! Let's get this one on YouTube!"

David after the dentist. Courtest of Snoo.ws.

The Huffington Post and Esquire featured a countdown of the "Most Messed Up Kids on YouTube" which shows the best videos parents have taken of their drugged children. I can't say this is a fad I'll miss when it passes.

It's not that I'd like the videos to stop coming, because I can spend hours upon hours just watching these kids make fools of themselves. However, their parents need to pay more attention to what their kids are up to when they're on the computer. Stuff like this follows people. David is forever going to be the "post-dental appointment drugged kid" just like that German guy will always be "the Numa Numa guy." Hopefully videos like these won't cause the kids problems later in life.

Two weeks ago, China yet again banned YouTube to all of its
289 million Internet users. This was done in an
attempt to block the circulation of footage of PRC police officers brutally
beating Tibetan civilians last year. It was also banned when the riots occurred last year that killed as many as 140 Tibetan civilians (according to Tibetan records) or, only 18 civilians (according to PRC reports).

This, of course, isn't the first time China has been in hot
water by the international community for human rights violations. The U.S.
State Department and organizations like Amnesty International conduct annual
reports on human rights in China, and the findings are often startling. Anyone
who advocates the independence of any of the Chinese territories that are under
Han Chinese control (like Tibet) is subject to punishment under the law. It's
also well known that these offenders are not given due process of law and can
suffer in prisons for unknown periods of time. People like Hu Jia, who last
year publicly criticized the Communist government, are still in prison for
"inciting subversion of state power."

Even with China on the world stage this summer as the host
of the 2008 Olympics, events in the country still echo of its strict Communist
past. The Chinese government still controls television broadcasts, and bias is
obvious. When I visited this summer, footage of the horrific May earthquake
that occurred in Sichuan province was still being shown--not the bloody,
gruesome footage I saw in the U.S., but instead, footage of survivors being
pulled and the country rallying together to heal the damage that occurred. This
was a full two months after the earthquake. While I understand that the purpose
of the footage was to try and move past the terrible event, I consider it propaganda
nonetheless.

In short, the human rights violations and media censorship
cannot continue with the economic growth of China. With advances in technology
that make the actions of government more transparent, China will, sooner or
later, have to come to terms that by welcoming Western goods, it is also
subject to greater scrutiny of its governmental operations. So next time you
log onto Yahoo!, YouTube, The New York Times, or Skype, be thankful that the
government isn't closely monitoring what you're doing. These are all programs
or sites that have, at one time, been censored or monitored by the Chinese
government.

Do people not have issues of their own to deal with? Twitter allows the stalkers of the world to legally stalk, or "follow" whoever they desire. When I googled, "Twitter followers," a link for an article titled, "How to Get More Twitter Followers" came up. It was at this point that I realized all people craving their 15 minutes of fame were going to be competing to make the list of people with the most Twitter followers. I would argue that Twitter is completely dumb because who really cares that you're "off to the grocery store," or "wearing your new red shoes"?! The media has begged to differ after the Demi Moore fan scandal.

Last week, Demi received a startling message from a fan saying, "gbye ... gonna kill myself now." Because Demi posted back, "Hope you are joking," other followers decided to take action and contact the police department. Therefore, a suicide was "prevented" through Twitter. Because people are posting all kinds of information, such as the potential suicide, who knows what else can be discovered, or prevented through this social media network.

There's always going to be a new way for people to communicate. Whether you're a famous actor, athlete, or just a "regular" person, Twitter can bring people together and allow you to share whatever information you desire. Because of Twitters dedicated fans, it's here to stay... at least until they discover something even more invasive!

Interlaced with multi-choice, true and false, and essay questions is the advertisement Molto's Pizza 14" 1 Topping Just $5, in bright red writing.

Jeb Harrison, history and economics teacher at Pocatello High School in Idaho, used advertisements on homework assignments and exams to pay for school supplies for his students.

"I just wanted to find a way to save money. We have to sell ads for our yearbook, for our school newspaper. I don't think this small amount of advertising will change my classroom," said Harrison according to AP.

The drastic downturn in the economy has caused public schools nationwide to experience lower budgets. According to NPR the high school posted signs by all light switches to remind everyone to conserve energy and save money by turning off the
lights. Clearly the Pocatello School District is focused on saving money.

But even with this lack of money in the school system, is it appropriate to allow ads to be printed on schoolwork?

I think this is ridiculous and completely unnecessary. As do many of the parents in Harrison's school.

They're so many different ways to raise money without distracting students during their tests or assignments by loud red ads printed on their work.

Lots of students would be affected by these ads negatively and possibly perform worse. With attention deficit disorders diagnosed more frequently in the 21st century, any unnecessary distractions should be removed from the classroom.

Harrison argues that the ads could help students understand the current economic crisis and compare this time period to that of the Great Depression .

This is not a valid point.

High school students understand that everyone is pinched for cash right now. Regardless if students spend money excessively or if they fail to pay attention to the news, they are informed that the economy is in the gutter and if they are not, then that is the school's responsibility to inform them on current events.

Harrison and the Pocatello school district are not the pioneers of this idea. In December AP reported that Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego also printed ads to generate extra spending cash for the classroom.

However, at this high school teacher Tom Farber charged different prices for different levels of exams. For example quizzes cost $10, tests cost $20, and final exams cost $30 to print advertisements on. According to the AP he raised $625 in one semester.

Despite the money raised from advertisements the distraction this could cause students is more important. It is shame that the school districts had so little that this felt like their only option to raise money for supplies.

School districts and their community should come together and generate ideas on how to help students succeed without distracting them by pizza ads.

Some of the seats looked closer to the moon than to center court at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan for this year's Final Four. Record crowds, as in over 70,000 fans, turned out for the final games of the NCAA tournament. Take a packed Allen Fieldhouse and multiply it by about 4.5. The number should come close to the attendance for the games in Detroit. This is just a little ridiculous, considering the revenue intake. It actually seems to make sense. Collegiate sports is a business, why not attempt to profit? It is hard to fault the NCAA for wanting to bring in the dollars, especially during rough economic times. Aside from the NCAA, schools should be allowed to bring in money as long as they handle the intake properly.

Steve Wieberg and Steve Berkowitz recently brought up very interesting points in a USA Today article relating to the NCAA and out of control marketing. The article mentioned advertising and promotion done by casinos, sales of stadium names, and apparel contracts.

Gambling is often viewed as inappropriate in regards to college athletics. Some schools now allow casinos to advertise within their gyms and stadiums. Let's face it, we all know what gambling is and the possible consequences associated with it. If a casino is willing to shell out the big bucks to sponsor a college or university, why not let them? If Sony is willing to pay a school $10 million for the rights to a stadium name, why not allow for it? Adidas and KU have an eight year, $26.67 million contract in place. The money taken in from the marketing does not go just to football and men's basketball. This money goes to the athletic department and helps fund scholarships, develop non-revenue sports, and graduate kids. Essentially, it allows for schools as a whole to succeed.

Some argue that media coverage, corporate sponsorship, and even video games are taking away from the "college" feel and making collegiate athletics seem too professional. Commercialization can be dangerous, but revenue intake also allows for great opportunity. The NCAA and colleges across the country need to make sure that the "student" is priority number one, when dealing with student-athletes. To avoid the "professional" feel, make sure that education is priority #1 and do not pay collegiate athletes. Some argue that they deserve to be paid. Scholarships are the pay in this situation. A football career may last four or five years, but an education lasts a lifetime.

Schools need to make sure they handle the opportunity associated with athletic revenue in a responsible manner. By doing so, overall benefits exceed monetary returns. 70,000 fans might seem like a crazy number, but who knows, in ten years we might see 170,000 fans at the Final Four. College sports are a business and profits are a goal. As long as providing an education and teaching students is the main objective at colleges and money associated with athletics is handled in a responsible manner, the NCAA and universities should be allowed to attempt to maximize profits.

Unless you are a die-hard Kyle XY fan, like my self, then
you're probably have no idea what save the tub means. Fortunately, hundreds of
people who have been cluttering up the message boards on ABCFamily.com know
exactly what that means and are doing everything they possibly can to save it.

First I feel that a little background information on the
show is necessary. Kyle XY is a show on ABC Family about a young man named
Kyle, played by Matt Dallas, who wakes up in the middle of a forest just
outside of Seattle while suffering from amnesia. The show revolves around Kyle
and all of the things that happen to him while he tries to solve the mystery of
who he is.

Now about the tub, Kyle sleeps in a bath tub and instead of bloggers begging ABC Family to save Kyle they have dubbed the saying "Save the tub" instead. That is just one of the many mysteries to Kyle.

The series premiered in June of 2006 and has produced three
complete seasons. Then, on January 31, 2009 Kyle XY fans everywhere got the
worst news they could possibly imagine, the show had been cancelled. This show was ABC Family's number one show for two years! It lost a little bit of ground when the channel came out with their hit series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager", but how many seasons can the show possible last? It's about a 15 year old girl that gets pregnant, will she get knocked up again in the second season? Highly doubtful therefor I think Kyle XY would have probably been the smarter choice to keep on. From
almost the moment the announcement was made massage boards all over ABC Family
have been filled with pleas from fans of all ages.

The thing about Kyle XY is that it related not just to kids
but to adults in their twenties, thirties, and even forties (according to the
message boards). The question that
most people are wondering is, why would ABC Family cancel one of its top shows?
In this economy most networks have completely gotten rid of the scripted show
merely because of the amount of money it takes to make a pilot. With reality TV
it costs barely anything. I think that the expense of a pilot is just the price
one has to be willing to pay for quality programming but I wouldn't want to bad
mouth the wonderful creations of such channels as VH1 who spawned the
masterpiece Rock of Love. Please tell me everyone realized the very large amount of sarcasm in that last remark. Now
that ABC Family has found a show that works it would only make sense to keep it
around and at least get a few more seasons out of it. But no, they have ripped
it away from us and many ABC Family viewers aren't having it. According to the
massage boards if ABC Family does not bring back the tub, they will lose more
than they think.

Personally, I do not believe that all of the people who have
said they are going to boycott the station are actually going to act on what
they have said. I think that they will continue to be angry until another
network picks up the show or ABC Family creates something else as genius as
Kyle XY. Will Harris, a blogger on premiumhollywood.com, had the idea that fans
should push for ABC family to create a regular season of 2 hour Kyle XY movies
for the series. Not only would this bring back the Kyle XY viewers, but also it
still leaves room for the networks new series'. Maybe hollywood could even capitalize on the idea and make a full length motion picture.

I think that if ABC Family does not have room for Kyle XY on their station, why don't they make it an online exclusive? Then the show could still be sold on DVD and for the people who love the show, we don't have to go another day wondering what exactly happened to characters such as Tom Foss, or if Kyle and Jessie are technically brother and sister. And if they are, why is ABC Family having them make out? Our questions about the show have not been answered and ABC Family needs to find a way to make that happen. If they don't, then what was the point of the show? Thats 43 hours of my life i will never get back. Well 86 hours if you count the second time i watched the entire series. Nonetheless i don't think we have seen the last of Kyle, or his tub!

Although I am definitely not an advocate of reality TV since its taken over most channels lately, an interesting reality show appeared on television just a few weeks ago in London. Jade Goody, a British reality television star documented her battle with cervical cancer in front of the cameras and for all to see. The heart-wrenching and sometimes gory details ensued.

Finally, a reality show that did not eliminate someone every week, an absence of watching people survive in a jungle to win money, and no extreme weight loss battles that would inevitably end with a contestant scoring a large sum of cash.

Reality TV was and is a hodge-podge of game shows and vulgar talent contests. Goody brought something new to the table---dare I say it---something educational and even eye-opening.

As could be expected though, Goody got her start in reality TV on a tacky little show known as "Big Brother". Like so many others before her, Goody became famous for being famous--a wonderful byproduct of true reality television. However, as is quite rare in the reality world, she was able to parlay her fifteen minutes into a do-good kind of show, a show that educated others on the consequences and daily struggles of dealing with cancer.

I must say I give her credit for divulging each day when she started to lose her hair more and more, showing her frail body weakening from loss of appetite, and having to explain to her two sons that "mommy was going to have to go away soon".

Not exactly the easiest things to do in private, let alone share with millions of viewers.

In a story by the NYTimes, Goody explained her end-of-life publicity by saying she hoped to earn as much money possible to provide for her sons after she was gone. Yes we all know that people who appear on reality television get paid for their participation, but even though Goody most likely received a large sum of money for her cancer documentary, I feel that her motivation to do so was completely justified in claiming to participate in the documentary solely for her children's sake. After all she was leaving behind a five-year-old and a four-year-old to be raised without their mother.

Its taken a long time for a reality show to actually bring about positive feedback. Although, Goody did receive flack for her show, I honestly think her ability to show viewers the dark side to cervical cancer was groundbreaking and much-needed.

Not many know what goes on behind the scenes in the midst of a battle with cancer, and Goody shed light on a sensitive subject--yes instigated by the want for money, but also to illustrate to the public what her life was like at the time.

My opinion, absolutely YES!

Who wouldn't want to purchase a cell phone where everything they need is right in front of their eyes? It is so convenient. But just because everything you need is right in front of you in an electronic device, does that mean everyone has to become so dependent on a phone? I believe that our world is making a huge transformation with the use of technology it is hard not to depend on a device such as the iphone when it has everything you need, and is right in the palm of your hand. However, I think that we are losing our ability to do the smallest things that we are all capable of doing like going back to the old ways of using our minds. The iphone is a luxurious accessory that people HAVE to have and CAN NOT live without, and because of people's dependency on it, it makes me believe that it has become the "life gadget".

Is it worth it? For most people yes, because it has become such a highly dependent item that once people have the iphone, they can never go back to just a regular phone.

This happened when I was watching the 6pm news Tuesday, March 31; the sports anchor mispronounced the coach's name. But by the 10pm newscast, his mistake was corrected. This isn't the first time it's happened to KMBC sports anchor Len Dawson though; it seems to be an almost nightly thing. My dad says he needs to retire, he's too old; he can't pronounce anyone's name. But you can't legally fire someone for being too old. But should you be able to reduce air time for older newscasters? I know for my dad he would like that, he hates watching Len Dawson.

Guess what? I finally learned what Skype really is! Do you
know what Skype is? What is it then? Okay, Okay.

I first heard about Skype several months ago. And up until
now, I had always thought Skype was just a video-conference application that
Oprah used a lot. I see her use it a lot on her show to interview people - I
mean, I read about it a lot in her newsletter - I mean, I...screw it.

Skype is actually a software application that allows users
to make telephone calls over the internet; other features include instant
messaging and file transfer. It has more than 400 million users around the
world.

I have noticed a lot of hubbub recently in newspapers
concerning Skype. Skype has announced that it will unveil a free application
this week for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, and, beginning in May, for various
Blackberry phones. AT&T, however, is blocking the free app from working on
the cellular or 3G network; it only works on Wi-Fi. By using Skype on the
iPhone, consumers can sidestep AT&T, allowing them to get by, potentially,
with cheaper voice plans. Consumers can also save a bundle on international
calls.

Public policy-makers and consumer advocates say it's an example
of AT&T, the sole carrier of iPhone in the U.S., trying to handicap a
direct competitor. "Consumers will pay the price for AT&T's blocking," they
say.

I understand why we, the consumers, would want cellular or
3G network access for Skype, but I gotta be on the side of AT&T on this one
- at least at this stage in the game.

AT&T is the only authorized iPhone carrier in the United
States; why the hell would they promote the services of a direct wireless rival?
Why would AT&T allow Skype to use its data network? That would be like
allowing your wife's younger, tanner coworker to have sex with your wife, who
is also your coworker. You can talk to my wife and have lunch with her like I
do, but you will not make the sex with her!

Technically, the limitation on Skype ( tan coworker) and
other Internet phone companies is imposed by Apple (marriage contract), which
has similar arrangements (don't touch my wife) with other carriers.

Skype should be happy - and I think it is, despite its
frustration with Apple - that it even has a spot on the iPhone. Wi-Fi is so
common now that the limitations of not being able to us AT&T's cellular or
3G network can't be that much of a drawback for Skype users.

The overall message is that now that millions of consumers
are going wireless, the largely unregulated wireless industry will have to realize
its day of FCC regulation will come. Oh it will come.

March was also my third month in this
country and it was the month when I realized how much I miss Europe and
especially Sweden. The thing that got these wheels in motion was a thing that
happened when I watched my first ever Nascar race. Just before I dozed of the
sport anchors announced that they, Fox, were going to put out the yellow flag
so they could have a longer commercial break. This means that the safety car is
going to be deployed onto the circuit and that the drivers must slow down and
drive behind it. I've seen the same thing in other sports, almost every sport
here in the U.S has a couple of interruptions by the television networks. Most
people seem to be okay with this, you don't hear Larry King rambling on about
commercials during a weightlifting competition, and that's fine with me. But as
a European I'm not used to this and I don't like these methods, I worry for the
future.

The one thing that worries me most is that
the main sport events, mostly in the U.S, gets longer and longer because of
commercials interruptions. How far can the television networks push their
interference to the events? In my mind they are already near the edge to what
the audience can and will accept. A normal basketball game, broadcasted on any
of the big networks, lasts for almost 3 hours and a football game can last for
more then 4 hours. That's a pretty long time to spend in front of the TV any
day of the week. Some might say that this is good, that the fans can enjoy more
airtime for their favorite sport. But extending the event time with commercials
isn't really giving the sport more airtime, its more a way of filling the
broadcast with things that doesn't have anything to do with the main event in
order to sell more advertising.

Others claim that interruptions during a
sport event are good because it allows you to do other things during the break,
like going to the bathroom or doing your laundry. One of the most thrilling
things with sport is that you always have to be on the edge when following an
event and when the networks allows you to go to the bathroom during a game they
take away a bit of this thrill. Going to the bathroom during a soccer game in
Europe is almost impossible because you'll miss to much of the action, but here
in the U.S you are can go to the bathroom during a commercial break which in
the end changes the event experience to the worse.

I think that sport fans would like to have
shorter games, not less game play but games with fewer things that make the
games unnecessary long such as commercial interruptions. As a sports fan I want
to see the game with only a few commercials and it shouldn't take all day to
finish watching it. The famous water cooler effect, that the marketing people
stride to achieve, will soon be gone if the games continues to become longer
and longer. No one will have the energy to see the whole thing anymore.
