In Omaha, Nebraska Steve Wilder woke up to realize that his throat was closed up and he was unable to breathe. In a panic he had to make the decision to suffocate to death, or perform a tracheotomy on himself. He stumbled to the kitchen, grabbed a steak knife, and cut into his throat. Blood went everywhere, but he succeeded and was able to breathe again. As horrifying as this sounds he claims to have felt no pain. With a proper tracheotomy he will be able to talk normally again. Wilder is quick to respond that God was the one who helped him through this horrendous situation. He believes he was meant to live through this and plans to make the best out of his life.

In Louisiana a family is claiming that their dog gave birth to a green puppy. Their boxer had a litter of puppies and one of them was supposedly born with a neon green tint to it, while all of the others came out normal. This odd coloring could be caused by the mom dog's placenta, or the owners trying to fool everyone with a dye job. I hope the puppy was born like this, but you never know because people are willing to anything to get on tv.
An 18-year old student in South Carolina was charged last week with an attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Ryan Schallenberger planned to put together at least five bombs and place them around his high school in a suicide attack. The plot to attack his high school was found in his journal after he was arrested. This journal consists of more than 50 pages about his plot, as well as praise for the shooting at Columbine High. He also wrote about how he knew what he was doing was wrong. Schallenberger was arrested after his parents called the police because they got a delivery notice for the 10 pounds of ammonium nitrate, the same fertilizer used in the Oklahoma City Bombing, he had ordered. He is being charged on 3 federal counts as well at on the state level.
It seems like every month now you are reading about students planning an attack on their school. At least in this case the parents were able to stop it before something tragic happened.
Alfred Williams, of St. Joseph, Missouri is not like most 1st graders. At the age of 70, Alfred had never learned to read so he decided to enter 1st grade and proves you are never too old to go back to school. His teacher, Mrs. Hamilton said that he knew how to write only three words when he first entered her class. Before he asked Mrs. Hamilton to teach him how to read Williams would listen to her class from the door when he dropped his grandchildren off at school. It only took Williams a couple weeks to learn the basic rules of reading and writing. Common tasks that come easily to most people used to be very difficult for Williams. For example, something as simple as grocery shopping was a struggle because he could not read any of the labels. I think it is very courageous for Williams to put himself into a classroom filled with 6 and 7 year olds. He is trying to better himself and has become a role model for his fellow classmates.
LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen are on the April cover of Vogue magazine, and many are calling this a racial issue. LeBron is the first African American male to be on the cover of the magazine, but people are arguing that the two are acting out racial sterotypes. On the cover LeBron is standing with he arm around Gisele with his mouth open and tongue out while dribbling a basketball. Some are saying that he is displaying a "gorillla-like" pose and the way they are standing makes them look like King-Kong and Fay Wray.
Vogue spokesman says that the two are, "sought to celebrate two superstars at the top of their game." James has commented on the photo and has no problem with it. He says that he is just, "showing a little emotion."
Others however are saying that this is not the first time a black athlete has been portrayed at "beastly." They have brought up past issues of Sports Illustrated where Charles Barkley
was on the cover breaking free of neck and wrist shackles. Or when Dennis Rodman was on the cover of Rolling Stone with horns poking out of his head. They believe that these images show black male athletes as being aggressive and threatening and that they need to stop.
I'm not really sure what to think about this story. Personally, everytime I've seen a cover of a magazine I didn't really look that far into it. However, if this continues to be an issue for some, magazines might have to rethink their future covers.
There is a new online game site where young girls are playing a game entitled, "Miss Bimbo." This game is a lot like "The Sims" game where you create a character, but these characters are bimbo girls. In this game you are to give your "Bimbo" diet pills because they are called on the site, "the easier way to eat." The point of the game is to get attitude points which are collected from going to the tanning bed, meeting a target weight, getting plastic surgery, and getting boyfriends. Girls as young at 8 years old are playing this game, and what does it say to them? At this age young girls easily relate to others, so many of them want to be just like their Bimbo. These are sending all of the wrong messages. The game was created by two men and they think that everyone is just ignoring the positive side. It's hard for me to see a positive side of buying your bimbo breast implants and making her take diet pills to help her lose weight.
