Package Scripting

If you are scripting a package that is set to air on that day, you will need to create two seperate and different package scripts. The first one you should focus on is the Anchor Intro Script and the second is simply known as the Package Script. The Anchor Intro Script is used for the newscast, while the Package Script is used for archiving purposes. We will start with the Anchor Intro Script. WARNING: When inserting comment boxes be sure you DO NOT create one comment box inside another one. This causes major scripting problems when printing scripts.

Anchor Intro Script

  1. Open up NewsRoom4 and go to the 17:30 KUJH cast. Check to see if the producer has already created a blank story page for your script. If not, create a new story for your script.

  2. Begin your script with an ANCHOR ON CAM comment box.

  3. After the comment box, hit return and type [ANCHOR].

  4. After [ANCHOR] hit return and type the one to two sentence anchor intro. The anchor intro should set up your package without giving away too much information about your story (For help with writing anchor intros for packages check out the guide to writing anchor intros for packages.) When you put this all together it should look like this…

  5. After your one to two sentence intro hit return and type ###. The three pounds keys are a visual cue telling the anchor to stop reading.

  6. Now you need a series of comment boxes for your package running time, your locater chyron, your identifying chyrons, and a reporter chyron. The number of comment boxes you will use will vary for each package you produce.

  7. The first comment box will always be the package running time box. Inside the box type VTR/PKG {?:??} EDIT ROOM ???? with the question marks after PKG replaced with the total running time of you package and the question marks after room replaced with the number of the room where you edited your package.

  8. The remainder of the comment boxes will be filled with either locater or identifying chyrons. You will want to list the chyrons in the order that the place or person appears during your package, and type the exact time the chyron should be put on the screen. For example, if your package begins with B-roll of Ellsworth Hall then your comment box would be CHYRON @ :00 KU/Ellsworth Hall. The time is :00 because the chyron will pop up right at the start of your video. If you have a soundbite of Stephanie Barrett that begins at the 36 second mark, then your comment box would be CHYRON @ :36 Stephanie Barrett/Ellsworth Hall resident.

  9. You will also need a reporter chyron. This is just a chyron identifying yourself. The standard reporter chyron for KUJH is Your Name/KUJH-TV reporter. If you do a stand-up during your package that is where the chryon will go. If you do not do a stand-up during the package, the chyron will go as early as possible when your voice is being heard. When you have all of your comment boxes filled out it should look something like this (Remeber that every Anchor Intro Script will be different)…

  10. The last part of scripting for Anchor Intro Scripts is optional. If there is an extra bit of information that would be best presented by the anchor, then you will script an anchor tag. This will be read by the anchor on camera after your package has aired. After your chyron comment boxes hit return and insert an ANCHOR ON CAM comment box.

  11. After the comment box, hit return and type [ANCHOR].

  12. After [ANCHOR] hit return and type the one to two sentence anchor tag. When you put this together it should look like this…

  13. Once you have your Anchor Intro Script complete, post your changes.

  14. One major thing to notice in the Anchor Intro Script is that you don’t have any of your voice over, nor do you have soundbite lengths or transcripts. That’s what the Package Script is for.

Package Script

  1. For package scheduled to air on the same day, your Anchor Intro Package Script is posted directly into that day’s newscast. The Package Script has to be saved in a different location however.

  2. Click on the Item Store icon at the top of NewsRoom4.

  3. In the item store window, you want to open the folder for the day in which you are working.

  4. Once inside the current day’s folder, click the add new item icon. (Be sure to use the add new item button in the Shared Items Assignment Files window and not the New Item icon in the top toolbar)

  5. You will type your package script in the story window that pops up.

  6. The Package Script begins just like the Anchor Intro Script. You need the ANCHOR ON CAM comment box, the [ANCHOR], the anchor intro text, and the three pound symbols. Along with the VTR/PKG chyron and the opening locater chyron. You may also have the reporter chyron, if it is going at the beginning of your package. Put this all together and it will look like this…

  7. After your locater chyron (and possibly your reporter chyron), you will type the text of your package script. When you come to a soundbite, insert two comment boxes. One for the identifying chyron and one for the complete soundbite transcript.

  8. Continue this same process for the rest of you script and the rest of your soundbites. Your extended script should look similiar to this…

  9. After your last soundbite you will have one or two sentences to wrap up the package. Be sure to remember your reporter outro. The standard reporter outro for KUJH is Your name K-U-J-H T-V News. Your reporter outro will look like this…

  10. After your Package Script is completely finished or you’ve come to a stopping point, click the Post Changes button. You will be prompted to enter a story title.

  11. Now you should see and be able to access your story in the current day’s folder. In the following example, the current day is Tuesday and the title of the package in that folder is Sample Package.
