Practice Assignment
During your first J419 multimedia newsroom shift you will follow these instructions to complete your first assignment. You will retrieve a script. You will make basic spelling corrections to the script. Then you will retype your final script.
Log in to one of the Macs in the multimedia newsroom.
Open up Firefox and go to Dick’s archive search page.
In the search field, type J419 Practice Script
Click on the J419 Practice Script link. This will take you to the script page. Print this script.
Read over the script and make any changes to misspelled words.
Open Microsoft Word to retype the script (Tips for rewriting scripts are included at the bottom of this tutorial).
Once you’ve converted the soundbite to a quote and changed any spelling errors you will want to put your name on the top of the Word Document.
Print your edited script.
You will turn in both the original practice script and your final edited script to your professor.
During your future shifts you will save the edited script as a Word document and attach that file to an email and send it to the your supervising J694 web producer.
Helpful tips for rewriting scripts
If the television script has a box with NAME ON CAM just ignore this. In the practice script Haley is the anchor, so it says HALEY ON CAM. Just ignore this.
Any boxes that have VTR/VO, VTR/SOT, VTR/PKG, etc. can be ignored.
If a box begins with CHYRON you may need to use this information or you may not. The chyron box should have some text followed by a slash mark followed by more text. You will need to read the text to determine if you need the information. If the text is giving a location, you will ignore that chyron box. In the sample script you will see Department of Motor Vehicles/1035 N. 3rd St.. Since that is a location, you will ignore it. If the chyron box has a name and title, then you will need to use that information. A name and title chyron box means a soundbite is played on TV. You will convert all TV soundbites to quotations. In the practice script there is a chyron box with Linda Hunt/Departmint of Motor Vehicles examiner. Following that box, there is a TRANS box. The text in the TRANS box is what you will make into your quote. So for the practice script you would type…Linda Hunt, Departmint of Motor Vehicles examiner, said “The current ages…we’re so diverse.”
Any names in brackets, like [HALEY] can be ignored. This is just telling the anchor when to begin reading.
Any ### symbols can be ignored. These just tell the anchor to stop reading.
