Hunter Ristau is a freshman double majoring in journalism with an emphasis in strategic communication and sport management. He is from Shawnee, Kansas. Hunter works in The Agency and has a communications internship with KU Athletics.
Favorite memory at KU: Basketball games at Allen Fieldhouse and being a part of the atmosphere. Favorite basketball game was against TCU when KU won the Big 12 Conference.
Most memorable J-School professor: Kerry Benson in J101. She makes students look forward to going to class.
What people should know about the J-School: Everyone in the J-School -- peers, advisors, professors -- want to help you succeed in any way that they can help. They are all really nice and will help you in any way you can. They want to see you do your best.
Favorite J-School class: J101 because of Kerry and all the things she would do in class.
Funniest memory from KU: The first day of school it was pouring rain and within two minutes of walking outside, I had to go back and change clothes between classes.
When I graduate I will always remember: All the people. Everyone is so accepting and willing to help others.
If I could give my freshman year self advice I would say: Get involved in whatever you can. That’s how you are going to meet people and get experience.
First thing that comes to mind when thinking of the J-School: Everyone is very professional and all the professors have real world experience and are here to make you the best and want to see you succeed. They make sure you build connections and can get a career. They want to see you succeed and teach you real world things.
Greatest source of joy: Probably when working on a group project and everyone is working hard and grinding on a path and reach what they were working toward.
Favorite childhood memory: Graduating high school. It was a big accomplishment.
Biggest success: In college, getting an internship with KU Athletics. Not many people get it and being a freshman to get the position is a big deal and something to be proud of.
Favorite way to spend time on campus: Hanging out with friends, on and off campus, walking to campus or hanging out in the dorms. He enjoys being with everyone regardless of what they are doing and to just being around others.
After graduation: Work in sports branding/marketing or sports communications in the NFL.
