For the 24 hours I had to go without media, I chose Saturday and tried to make the most of my time without my usual distractions, without work or school to keep me busy. I realized when I first got up that I instinctively check my email and facebook when I have nothing to do. Resisting that urge, I went to play video games. After a short while I went on to practice my Bass guitar, which is something I had been meaning to do for days, but kept putting off. Driving downtown later in the day I would normally listen to my ipod, but instead I had to listen to the radio. I used to listen to the radio a lot, as a delivery driver, until my parents got me an ipod last Christmas. To keep myself occupied I went on to run errands, read books, watch television and play videogames. These were things I used to do much more as a child, but since I became addicted to the internet, found youtube, and got an ipod, I have found myself doing those activities less and less. I realize from my day without media that I have lost a lot of my familiarity with radio and television. The biggest challenge was resisting turning on my cell phone. I constantly felt like I might be missing important phone calls, although I had warned my close friends and family that I would be unavailable for the day. The best part of being media free was getting to things I have been meaning to do for weeks. Basically from this experience I realized that I can get more done if I spend less time online and with my cell phone and ipod.
