Put a Towing Warning in Reserve Lot

fixit.jpg

Having your car towed is no fun. Not only are you left without a ride, but you are forced to pay a rediculous fee to recover your vehicle. What can make this situation even more frustrating is not being aware of this consequence ahead of time.
The Reserve apartments located at 2511 W. 31st, also known as "the sophomore dorms," house hundreds of students and is one of the largest complexes in Lawrence. With all of these students, guests are sure to visit and nonchalantly park in one of the many parking spaces without knowing they can be towed, and they do. Paige Carrier, a sophomore at KU is one of many who has dealt with this problem when she was visiting a friend one night.
"I had no idea I could be towed until it happened," Carrier said. "I wish they would have signs like the ones on campus that warn you." Sophomore Aaron Quint, a resident at The Reserve also complains about the problem saying he has had friends in town from another college get towed and ruin their weekend.
Jackie Keane, leasing manager at The Reserve commented about the issue saying there are signs that say "reserved" but none about the potential of being towed. Keane was open to suggestions and said she would look further into the problem. For now, students are hopeful that Keane will work on getting some warnings put up.
"It's not fair that visitors have no idea they can get towed," Quint said. "They really need to do something about this."

Wouldn't the signs saying "reserved" be enough information? If I saw that and knew that it wasn't reserved under my name I would know better than to park there. That alone is enough aside from common knowledge that most apartment complexes if not all apartment complexes with car ports are usually illegal to park in unless you are the renter of the port.

Aric Toler:

This complaint is not really all that valid. All of the spaces are numbered and say "RESERVED." Of course you are not supposed to park there unless you know you can. It's common sense to not park under any covered spots in an apartment complex if you don't live there, especially if they are numbered and it explicitly says RESERVED.

Also, it's ridiculous, not rediculous.

Bethany Black:

I cannot believe they can tow a car without warning you first. I live next to the Jayhawk Bookstore, which tows all the time, but at least they have big signs threatening to tow. Their signs even include the amount one will have to pay to recover their vehicle.

Alex Talley:

Well, the fact that the sign does say reserved gives reason enough not to park there. I understand the concern that it does not say abything about the towing consequence, though. I think if the sign said there would be a fine for violators it would keep people from parking there much more. It almost seems like it is the towing companies way of getting more money out of students.

Leonard Byrd:

This is definately something that needs to be taken care of. I personally have had to deal with apartment complexes that threaten to tow my vehicle because I was not supposed to be parked there, and it is a real hassle when there were no signs in the first place
