The Jayhawk Food Mart parking lot on 9th street has been a problem ever since I moved to Lawrence in 2005. As you can see from this picture there are giant holes in the road which have to be driven through in order to leave the store. Brandon Leddy, University of Kansas sophomore, said he hates going to this store simply because of these pot holes. “I’m always scared I am going to get a flat tire when I go there. They are really bad,” he said.
Potholes, especially ones this massive, have been known to cause serious damage to cars and have even been known to cause whiplash in certain people.
Kathy (declined to give me her last name), works at Kathy’s Alterations right next to the Food Mart. She informed me that she was told by Christine Krzanowsky, the owner of Jayhawk Food Mart, that the parking lot would soon be fixed. However, once I was finally able to contact Christine and she was “at her desk,” the owner of the Jayhawk Food Mart said that she could not give me an exact date when she was planning on getting the parking lot re-paved.

Matt Wilkerson, who lives right by Jayhawk Food Mart, said that he is sick of all the potholes in Lawrence and that he just assumes they will never be fixed. When asked if he thought this particular pothole was a problem he told me that he felt “trashy” living so close to this parking lot.

I live close to the Food Mart and I agree the pot holes are a major problem. Every time I drive over them my car jumps around all over the place. Just last week I bought a box of popcorn from the Food Mart and when I was leaving the popcorn spilled all over my car! I wish they would fix them.

The Jayhawk Food Mart was the most convenient place for me to get gas, but because of the huge potholes in the parking lot I drive down the street instead. I think that if they fixed them they might increase thier business. Since most people drive SUV'S they may not notice but for the people that drive cars, it would be greatly apprecicated.
