I began my 24 hour media free period on Saturday morning at eight. I live with three other girls, two of which were out the door for work by nine and the other who is in our class, and was doing her 24 media free time at the same time I was. This made getting homecoming plans finalized nearly impossible because I do not have a landline phone. Luckily I was only going to my neighbors’ house for a bbq, but even this was done in a different manner. To get a hold of them I had to walk over there and ring the doorbell, which is something I had never done before. Normally I just call them to make plans. I started off strong, with no desire to use my cell phone, check my email, or Facebook. This was surprising because the day before I bought a new phone and for the first time had full internet use from my phone; making it incredibly easy to access all that was “illegal” for this assignment. Three hours in is when temptation began. I constantly reached in my pocket and pulled out my powered off phone. The best example that showed how much I rely on my phone and the phones of those around me is my boyfriend goes to K-State and decided last minute he wanted to come in town. He knew I was going to be unreachable for 24 hours, but did not realize Bethany (my roommate) would be also, and had no way to get a hold of me. I did not find out he wanted to come to Lawrence until Sunday when my media free time was over. I honestly felt lost without my phone, and learned I completely rely on it…How sad!
