My initial plan to go media free was to begin the 24 hour period at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning when I had to begin working. Not using my cell phone for 24 hours would not be too hard if I was at work most of the day and then I could just relax at home until the my time was up. This plan did not get off on the right foot.
As my friend is dropping me off at my car Sunday morning I had realized that it had been towed the previous day during the football game. Now I had to use my cell phone to figure out where my car had been towed, call my parents for the 210 dollars that it was going to cost me, and call someone for a ride home from work. At this point, the media free project seemed impossible. But once I had found my car and gotten home from work, I again started my 24 hour period being media free at around 4 o’clock pm.
Most Sunday afternoons at my house are spent surfing facebook for new pictures from the weekend. On any other given weekend it would have been a challenge to stay off facebook because it has become such a bad habit, but to my surprise our internet was not working so this wasn’t going to be an issue.
I must admit that it was very hard not to pick up my phone while I was just relaxing the rest of the day away. I did find although sometimes it seems absolutely necessary to use your cell phone it can add to your relaxation. I found that it reduces stress by not worrying about answering to every text message. Being cut off from the rest of the world besides my roommates made it nice to just hang out with them and not worry about anything else going on.
