I decided to go Media Free from Sunday at 10pm until Monday night at 10pm. After completing the task, I have to say it was actually liberating to not have my cell phone, Facebook and my Ipod for a whole entire day.
At first I didn’t think it was going to be tough at all considering I had class until 2 and then other extracurricular activities until 9pm. However it became a challenge when I went to the library this morning. Usually before my 9am class, I would sit at the computer in Anschutz Library checking my e-mail and Facebook while playing music. Although it was tempting to go on Facebook, I ended up renewing my love for Spider Solitaire and Minesweep playing those two games for 30 minutes straight.
During my classes I actually felt myself paying attention the whole entire time. Usually my cell phone is my watch and I would usually pull it out of my backpack every 10 minutes to see if was getting close for class to end. In my French 375 class, I actually participated in the discussion about improvements that should be made to universities. My COMS 342 class, we had a review over our test on this coming Wednesday, I participated in that review session more than I have in the previous tests in that class.
Throughout the whole day, I was able to get a lot of my errands done from returning a lab coat to a friend that I borrowed as a Halloween costume, to buying a new rug for my apartment without being distracted with Facebook, checking e-mail and my Fantasy Football team. I think that this was a good exercise in showing how distracting technology can be at times.
