Media Free

I chose to abstain from modern technologies from Thursday night to Friday night because it didn’t interfere with any important television watching to me. I did not use any media during the 24 hours and it was harder than I thought it would be. I had to break out the old CDs for the first time since I got my iPod two years ago and it made me wistful of the times when I could carry 4,800 songs in a wallet-size device at one time.

This assignment made me aware of the ease, or more appropriately, the convenience with which we already have taken for granted because of the internet. For example, to waste time I was playing my guitar but after a short while I wanted to learn some new songs. However, I could not look up the music online like I usually do when I want to learn a new song. I thought of going to Mass St. Music and buying a book of music, but then I realized I could wait eight more hours then go online and save myself $15. We are already deep into a digital age and it is becoming increasingly impossible to function in society without internet literacy. Every single aspect of our lives is affected by the internet, I would say positively because of the increased convenience and functionality that it inherently provides. From text messaging and the ensuing reliance on cell phones, to FaceBook and iPods, our culture is very different from five years ago and causes awe when I think about what technology will offer in another five years.
