I chose to start my 24 hours of being “media free” at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. I was not really concerned about going “media free” for only 24 hours considering the fact that I don’t have an i-pod and it was the weekend, so there was no need for me to be on the internet. I also wasn’t worried about being without my cell phone, until I went into the Nebraska game where I was separated from my friends. I had no way of contacting them and I had told them earlier that I was without my cell phone. Long story short, I turned around and they were gone.
However, I was not about to leave the game. Since I was without my cell phone and had no way of contacting my friends; I made friends with a different group of Jayhawk fans. I cheered and yelled with them for the entire game and explained to them what had happened to me. This was a rewarding experience for me because I would never have met these people if I had contacted my friends and sat with them.
Living in a society full of media, it is very challenging for someone to be “media free.” When I returned home after the game I still had no idea where my friends had gone. It wasn’t until the next day that I actually talked to them about what had happened. Also, when I checked my facebook they had written on my wall “what happened to you at the game.” I think it is funny that you can get completely separated from someone without a cell phone and literally be lost in society without media.
