Graffiti is beginning to make its mark around campus. On various locations around town a graffiti symbol is popping up on street signs, sidewalks and walls. These tags have now made their way to KU’s campus. One place in particular is Mallot Hall’s air conditioning unit. Graffiti may not be a detriment to our health or make our morning commute a rough ride but it is a problem that should have some light shed on it. The University of Kansas has a reputation of having one of the most aesthetically pleasing campus’ in the country. Why shouldn’t we want to maintain that? With a few of our athletic programs currently achieving perfection, our campus should also reflect the meticulous detail and pride that KU takes in all facets of its operations. The Department of Facility Operations handles problems such as these. The dispatcher takes down all of the pertinent information and submits a work request. That work request goes through Assistant Director of Facility Operations Rick Nightingale who was kind enough to explain the process to me. The F.O. Department takes calls at (785)864-4770. You can also check out the F.O. website. When asked if he was bothered by the graffiti, Piper Senior Calvin Norwood said, “It’s not life threatening but I don’t like seeing it. Go tag an alley or something that no one cares about.”

I agree with you, KU has quite a reputation. It may seem corny, but everyone on campus needs to respect, and take care of, our surroundings. People showing their artwork need to do it in class, where it will be appreciated, and not on public/private property. I want my university in the news for good feats, not petty vandalism.

Yes, I agree that the graffiti takes away from campus. The graffiti on Malott is a perfect example of the fact that the University is slow to clean it up. A couple of years ago, there was a big problem with campus graffiti and it was not until the campus media picked it up that they really started to paint over, and clean up the graffiti. You would think that with all of the tours that they have here, it would be a priority to keep the campus clean.
