Install crosswalk for safer campus before a deadly accident happens.

Picture%20001.jpg

Trouble is looming, a tragedy is waiting to happen. I know it doesn't seem like that big of a deal but it will when someone gets hurt. A simple crosswalk is the solution to this disaster waiting to happen.

There needs to be a crosswalk at the intersection of West Campus Rd. and Stratford road. This spot is a popular walking route for the many students living just off campus in that area. That area alone is the home of three fraternities, and five sororities. With around eighty students in each house, that is around 640 students alone who walk across that street to get to campus.

Too many times in this country we wait for a disaster to happen before we change policies or fix the problem. It is about time to take charge and take preventative measures rather than waiting for a disaster to happen. With a crosswalk at this intersection, it will force cars to be aware that this is a popular route for students and that they should be looking for students crossing the road.

With new advancements in technology and students being on their cell phones or listening to their mp3 players, students are not as observant to their surroundings.

Bailee Miller, a sophomore at Kappa Delta, talks about a close call she witnessed. " A girl in front of me, had one earpiece in from her ipod, her other ear was occupied with a cell phone when she started to cross the street, luckily at the last moment, she looked up in time to jump out of the way of a speeding car. A crosswalk at that intersection would be a great idea for everyone."

I took this problem up with the public works department; I spoke with a lady when I called in who took down my number and complaint. She told me that they would contact me if they needed anything else from me. Sadly, I was a bit nervous and did not remember her name. Hopefully this will not be my last post on this issue because there is an accident waiting to happen if a crosswalk is not put into place.

Dani Fehr:

I've walked this way several times with friends and have noticed the need for a crosswalk. Although I think that it is of extreme importance that both drivers and pedestrians are more cautious of their surroundings, the construction of a crosswalk at this location would ensure a more secure commute to and from campus!

I walk this way everyday and there should definately be a cross walk there, at least once a week i almost get hit by a car or that occasional crazy KU bus
