Fix This Sidewalk

jour-3.jpg
In front of Snow Hall many students can be seen tripping over a gap in the sidewalk. In front of the bus stop sign a group of bricks have come undone on the sidewalk leaving a hole where thousands of students and faculty walk daily. Sophomore Michael Keller said, "I watched some kid eat pavement the other day. It may be entertaining but someone is going to get hurt."

Campus Facilities Operations is in charge of keeping up maintenance on campus. The department had been unaware of the issue. After being told about it, Vikki Baldwin said they would have the problem taken care of soon and was grateful for being informed of it. Doug Riat, stated that on average there are over a thousand projects that the department oversees a year. The work varies from remodeling projects to every day maintenance issues. According to Riat all service calls are categorized by urgency ranging from one being an "urgent response", two being "get to as soon as possible" and three being "fill in when you can". The sidewalk is categorized as a two or a three. Most services can be fixed in just a few days however; some may take up to week depending on the material needed. If there are any questions about the sidewalk or any other maintenance questions or concerns Riat can be contacted at (785) 864- 4770. It is located at 1503 Sunflower Road, Lawrence, KS.

Leah Thrasher:

I have seen this spot and wondered what happened. I had no idea it was an ongoing issue! Hopefully it will get fixed soon, but with all the other projects it looks like we might graduate before that happens :). Good job giving all the details on the ratings of how quickly things are fixed and their priority levels.

Amruta Bhadkamkar:

I almost tripped over that sidewalk the other day. It can be very dangerous if anyone actually falls down. It's a good thing the department was cooperative but they should fix this ASAP.

Amber Allen:

That looks really bad.I don't understand why something that bad in a heavily walked sidewalk took so long to fix? Glad you got it done.
