Fix This Computer

P11000730.JPG

One of the computers in the computer lab in the KS Union has been out of order for the past three weeks. On an average day, it is next to impossible to find a computer in any of the labs or libraries on campus during the day and when any of these computers is broken or being restored, it is very difficult to treat the matter with equanimity.

Imagine this scenario: you have an important paper due in class in the next fifteen minutes, you need to make some final changes and print it out, and the only computers to be seen have huge ‘Out of Order’ signs posted on them. It is enough to make any student see red. I have experienced this myself and I have also heard umpteen students complaining about it. Therefore, I thought it was about time to do something about this situation.

I asked one of the student workers in the computer lab who the person, responsible for repairing the computers, was and I got the run-around for ten minutes. The student absolutely refused to tell me who the person was and kept assuring me that the computer would get fixed soon. Since I had a commitment elsewhere, I decided to come back when another student worker was on duty. This student was a little more helpful and told me who the responsible person was though she refused to tell me the number for the first five minutes. After a little coaxing, I managed to get the number from her though she wasn’t very happy about it. The person responsible for repairing broken computers is her supervisor Tom Roderick and he can be reached at the IT centre (785) 864-0470.

David Ugarte:

I know how frustrating and stressful it can be to need a computer to print something due soon, when all the computers are either taken, or broken. I hope they fix that computer soon.

I can definitely sympathize with you on this topic. I just got my laptop back after having to send it out to be repaired. Three weeks without a computer made me rely solely on computers on campus. It is important to keep these resources running for those of us who do not have access to a computer.

Thats annoying. With finals coming up every computer is going to be full. They really should get it fixed before finals week when students are going to need it.

Micole Aronowitz:

I agree with you completely. It is annoying when you need to use a computer and either they are all taken or out of order. I hope they fix the computer soon.

There are two things that surprised me about this issue. One that the computer sat that long before it was finally fixed and two how unfriendly the people were about the situation. Our world is a technological one and being a college student if I didn't. have a computer I would be in big trouble. I was surprised by the people not wanting to give you names or numbers because it was an issue that needed to be fix and making a phone call would not have hurt the situation it would have only helped.

Stacy Dvorak:

I agree with Evan, we are students and for the most part the computers in the Union are there for our benefit. Students working in the computer lab should want to help fellow students and be more proactive about fixing a broken computer.
