Fire Codes Exposed

The doors in Blake Hall are very dangerous on a normal day, let alone during an inferno. This is a serious issue for anyone who enters, but more importantly for those trying to exit in an emergency.

Everyone knows not to take the elevator during a fire as the stairs are the best way to escape danger. In Blake Hall on floors two through six on the West side of the building the double doors cannot both be opened at the same time. This is a problem because these doors are marked as the doors to escape a fire.

After recognizing there was a problem I contacted in person Betty Joe Ross who is the office manager of the Political Science department on the fifth floor at Blake Hall. She informed me that she was unaware of the problem and I then contacted the office of Facilities Operation at 785-864-4770, located behind Stauffer Flint.

When the two doors collide as people are leaving class it is usually pretty comical to see one struggle to try to open a door that is impossible to open. I don't believe there would be much humor if these same folks needed to use these same doors to escape an emergency.
