My day without media began at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. I found myself feeling a little uneasy knowing that I would be denied the comfort of my cell phone, but ready to give it a try. Upon waking up, I realized that this was a golden opportunity to take a stroll down memory lane, and fill my day with activities that I participated in when I was younger. Furthermore, to remember what life was like before new media.
After watching the football game on television, I decided to head out to the basketball court and shoot hoops. It was nice to be able to use the time I would normally spend on the internet engaging in other activities that I enjoy. After that, I decided to read a few magazines and take up a new hobby: scrap booking. This experience opened my eyes to all types of different pastimes that I sometimes neglect or forget about because I am so wrapped up in my media bubble. Surprisingly, half way through the day, I found that being busy with other activities; I was no longer focused on my cell phone. This was a very rewarding experience, as it forced me to step outside my comfort zone and find other activities to focus on.
It is amazing how reliant we have become on new media. Additionally, it has become second nature to walk down the street and see every other person either on their cell phone or listening to music on their iPod. Moreover, it makes you realize that our world has and will always be evolving and growing, and each generation will adapt and grow with it. This activity taught me that new media is an integrated part of our lives, but should not consume it.
