I chose Thursday to go completely media free. To be honest, I didn’t think this would be a hard task because I am not dependent on my phone anyways. I don’t have text messaging on my phone and I am not one that likes to do any talking on it, I would rather do it in person.
I didn’t realize how much I actually do use my phone, for other things than communicating. During class I would find myself reaching into my bag to get it out and check the time. Since I didn’t have anything to take my attention away from what was going on, I interacted in class more. I realized I took part in discussions I never have before.
One thing that was really hard for me was being away from the internet; not Facebook so much but from my e-mail. During the day my mom and I e-mail each other many times when she is bored at work and I have a break from class. At the library, I spent my time reading ahead for class instead of telling my mom unnecessary things that happened to me on campus that day.
This assignment taught me what useless things I use media for in my life. I realized that most media can make one disconnected with the “real-world" and things that are going on around them. I actually found myself worried about useful things, like school-work, instead of my ex-boyfriend's Facebook status. As long as I have basic cable so I can watch the news and my friends and family to keep me company, I will feel connected.
