Dangerous Intersection at 15th and Engel road

Intersection350.jpg

If you travel near Daisy Hill, be careful. The intersection of 15th and Engel Road is dangerous territory. The main issue is the vision obstruction for drivers headed southbound on Engel Road. The large hedges keep motorists from being able to see drivers comming over the steep hill on 15th street.
"Sometimes we ask the residents to trim it back if it's on private property," said Jim Beavey, Forrester Supervisor.
Beavey said that he was unclear exactly whether or not the hedges were on city property or not, but he said that a crew would take a look on Monday, the 19th.
Another problem with the intersection is the uneven pavement. Although it does not seem like a large issue, it is in fact a distraction that adds to the danger for drivers trying to make it safely across the intersection.

After attempts to contact ,Margie Baston, of the City of Lawrence Street Maintenance Division, no one was available for comment. As of Tuesday, November 20, the street was not repaired.
Another issue brought up by locals including, Sherry Her, a 3 year resident of McCollum Hall, was the fact that the 30 mile-per-hour speed limit was too fast. Her argues that driving east on 15th street is dangerous. Motorists driving 30 miles-per-hour may not have enough time to stop if a pedestrians opposite the hill were in the crosswalk.
"I've almost hit people driving only 25; it's still too fast," said Her.
the corner of 15th and Engel road is one that many Lawrencians agree needs work. Hopefully the city will hear those cries before a serious accident happens.

i hated having to cross at that intersection when i lived at the dorms.

Katy Blair:

I'm glad you pointed this intersection out. I had to deal with it when I lived in the dorms, and on my way to work, basically four years of this area. Don't even think about using it unless you want to be halfway out into the street to see! It was always so frustrating, other drivers getting mad because you're past the stop sign so far, in their way. I hope they do something soon.

A. Stewart:

I used to bike across 15th at this intersection when I worked on West Campus and it was really hard to get across the street safely. By the time I could see approaching cars, it was too late to make it across. The uneven road surface made it even more dangerous to dash across quickly.
