Every new piece of technology is just another distraction. Often one distracting product is combined with other to create an even more distracting piece of technology. The iPhone is a perfect example of this. A cell phone is distracting enough, but when you add an iPod, camera, and internet into the mix, your are left with an even more distracting piece of technology. With that being said, I was much more productive without these distractions.
Often I do not recharge the battery right away on my cell phone once it has gone dead. In this fast paced society I feel the need to relax and not be disturbed, so this was not hard for me. However sometimes being disconnected is not always a good thing. For example this Sunday while doing this experiment my friend called me and left a message explaining how he had an extra Chief’s ticket. Because I turned my cell phone off before I went to bed I never got the call and missed my opportunity.
Not being able to use the internet was the hardest part of this experiment for me. In many ways I believe my generation has become lethargic due to the instant gratification that current technology has to offer. Before computers people had to look in multiple places to research information. This taught people not only how to budget their time, but also that the things we really want in life take time and effort. Because there is a world of information on the internet, having been without this instant gratification made me understand how lazy my generation is becoming. However, on the other hand without the internet, life in many ways would be much more difficult. From this experiment I learned that technology is bittersweet.
