A Quiet Sunday

I originally attempted this assignment late Thursday night, thinking I could go from midnight Thursday to midnight Friday. It started out well, I slept for the first six or seven hours, so that wasn't too bad. After that I began to like not using the computer, ipod or phone, thinking I was free from calls and texts that I felt obliged to respond to. That if someone wanted to contact me, they couldn't and there was nothing I could do about it. My demise began around 2 p.m. on Friday I got curious, just wondering if I had missed any text messages or voicemails on my phone. I told myself I didn't care what they said or who they were from I was just curious. I thought turning my phone on wasn't really using my phone, so it would probably be ok. Once I turned the phone on and heard the jingle notifying me I had new messages it was all downhill. The 14 hours went to waste and I convinced myself there was no way I could make it through a Friday night without my phone. I viewed and listened to my missed messages and instantly felt at ease. I had gotten my fix but the fix meant I would have to try again Sunday. So Yesterday around 10 a.m. I turned the phone off for a second time and I was successful. Giving up the e-mail wasn't difficult for me at all. Especially on a Sunday, that's the day I get the lease e-mail so it made sense to give it up then. Insight wise, I liked having my phone off. It's nice not being able to be contacted. It's almost like getting a day off from constant texting and calls from your parents. Normally when my phone is off my Mom worries and insists that she pays for my phone and it must be kept on at all times. Having an excuse to turn it off was surprisingly refreshing for a day. I spent my Sunday lazily watching tv with my roommates and went to a late showing of "Dan in Real Life." All in all it was an enjoyable day free from contact with everyone except the people I live with. Part of me wonders if it would be a good idea to keep my phone off every Sunday. I'm still thinking about it.
