I started my 24 hours at 9 p.m. Friday. I did this because I knew I was going to have to get up early Saturday morning to tailgate for the football game. So I watched television for a little while on Friday night and then went to bed. By the time the football game was over, it was after 3 p.m. I then went to see a movie with some of my friends and we all hung out until past my 24 hour period.
By keeping myself busy with other activities, I definitely didn’t miss the internet. Two of my main uses on the internet are Facebook and email, and since I was already conversing with others throughout the day, I didn’t feel the need for that form of entertainment. Luckily, this was an easier day to do this assignment since I had so much going on. It would’ve been much tougher on a week day where I was completely bored and my friends weren’t available to hang out.
The one aspect that I was surprised by, is that several times throughout the day, I reached into my pocket instinctively to look at my cell phone. I did this forgetting that it had been turned off. That was eye opening to me to see how much I depend on a cell phone on a daily basis.
This assignment taught me that I truly do depend on modern technology throughout my daily life and that I use it subconsciously even. However, it also reaffirmed my belief in the importance of spending time face to face with others as opposed to resorting to talking via Facebook when given the choice. Yet, even as I say that, I’m on the internet currently. Life without technology is just hard to avoid.
