Social Goods through Facebook
The Facebook Community “Support Alzheimer's Research” is promoting a “social good” by raising money and gaining support for research on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s. One way it is doing this is by spreading the word through Facebook by using the invitation tool to directly invite people to join their cause. Another tool being used is the “donate” tool, where people can directly push the “donate” button and quickly and easily donate as much money as they desire. Another way this cause is being promoted through Facebook is by having people who are in the group display the “causes” application and more directly the “Support Alzheimer’s Research” application on their profiles. This allows everyone who goes to their Facebook page to view the application, which ultimately leads to them clicking on it and being directed to a page full of information educating them on the actual disease and giving them resources to show how they can help. Another tool this community is using on Facebook to promote “Support Alzheimer’s Research” is the “wall post.” On the page for this cause over 400 wall posts about the disease, ways to help, and words of support are featured from people of this community. Using Facebook to promote this cause is working because it consists of over 44,600 members and has raised over $1,700 dollars. This proves that using Facebook is an effective way to network. The group has a lot of success raising money and spreading the word about Alzheimer’s disease.
