Save Darfur

A group that I feel promotes a tremendous amount of “social good” on the Facebook network is the “Save Darfur” group under the causes section. The purpose of the group is to help end the genocide that is going on in Darfur, Sudan.

Facebook users are invited to join the group and invite their friends to join, but more importantly are encouraged to donate to the cause. As of today, there are 598,728 members and with each day the number is rapidly increasing. So far $44,230 has been donated just by Facebook users alone. The group’s creator has done an amazing job keeping the members aware of the difference they are making and helping give incentive to people for donating. For example, in September some companies learned of what the Facebook group was doing and offered to match the donations that were brought in for a week. Group members are also encouraged to recruit new members, raising the total awareness and potentially raising the donations.

This group is definitely effective. If the total number of members is not enough inspiration to join, just look at the amount of money donated. This Facebook tool is a wonderful way to raise awareness and increase involvement towards saving Darfur.

Leah Thrasher:

Great job on this! I think that your community story turned out better than mine. The cause is very noble and you wrote it very well.
