The Facebook community “ Pink Ribbon” is promoting a “social good” that is gaining awareness of breast cancer and raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. One way that it is doing this is by spreading the word through Facebook by having the breast cancer ribbon visibly displayed on member’s profiles. This allows people who view their profile to view the application, which redirects them to the “Pink Ribbon” home page, which educates them about the cause, and how they can join. Another tool is the invitation tool, which allows you to directly invite people to join the Pink Ribbon cause.
The “Pink Ribbon” application was created by, Chris Keenum. Currently this Facebook group has 1,424,894 members with the ultimate goal of 2,000,000 members.
This page also informs members how they have collaborated with Yahoo and created the Pink Ribbon Toolbar. For every 1,000 people who use the toolbar this month, $150.00 will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. If everyone in the group uses the Pink Ribbon Toolbar this whole year, they could potentially generate over 2,500,000 dollars in donations.
Using Facebook to promote the “ Pink Ribbon” cause is an effective strategy because it has over 1.4 million members and has the potential to raise over 2.5 million. This helps prove that Facebook is an effective way to network and bring awareness about breast cancer.
