In-world journalism is a waste of time in my opinion. I feel that the people that are in-world doing things do them because they feel their “real” life is not fulfilling enough. Where in real world news most people are exposed to real news and events where in Second Life everything that is done is made up. Also while there are people that are on their making money, or lindens, a person would need to devote a large amount of time to make any substantial amount of money at all. One of the only ways I could even remotely see in-world news surpassing real world news is through technological aspects to the world. One of the aspects of Second Life I do find useful is for teaching. If a person is the leading individual in a certain category they obviously cannot be everywhere at once. With Second Life it gives people the opportunity to gather on opposite sides of the globe and learn something at the same time. Even with the opportunity to do this though a conference call would be able to do the same thing in the real world. To apply journalistic skills in-world would be a tough task with the fact that people may not want to come forward with information. If in-world actions can affect the real world though news can be made out of those actions. The actions are wide-spread though so it is difficult how to report on something like that. If a person could figure out how to include everybody in the virtual world then Second Life may make a bigger impact on society, but until all of society jumps onto the Second Life phase it will continue to be a minuscule part of everyday life.
