Facebook communities promote causes by creating groups and fighting for what they believe in. The Facebook global group STOP BULLYING IN OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES!!! is an open common interest group that seeks to eliminate verbal and physical abuse in the form of bullying.
In the description of the group, the administrator describes it as a support for anyone who is being bullied, or that is sick of their child being bullied. The administrator for the group offers her contact information, so new members and existing ones can ask whatever questions they may have.
The group utilizes such tools as posted links to other helpful Web sites such as Walk for Talk (a help site for the verbally abused), and uses its wall as an open forum for discussion about abuse.
The wall displayed many long, thoughtful posts related directly to the topic. Some members discussed what needed to be done to alleviate the deep-rooted problem of bullying in society. Others shared deeply personal stories about their experiences being bullied and dropping out of school because of it. Everything that was on the page seemed to be directly on topic and avoided side notes. Every post was very passionate in its cause, which would make those who are affected by bullying issues eager to join.
Photos and video can be added to the page, but except for one photo, the group was not effectively using all of the tools at its disposal. Also, the related groups thread did not have any groups that directly related to the subject of verbal abuse and bullying.
