Washington-In a surprising announcement Monday morning, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales confirmed his resignation.
The country's first Hispanic Attorney General made his decision after months of backlash from Congress, who repeatedly questioned
many decisions made by Gonzales, including his initiation of the controversial eavesdropping authority.
Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy said Monday Gonzales had "suffered a severe crisis of leadership that allowed our
justice system to be corrupted by political influence."
Gonzales has at least one supporter left in Washington. President Bush stands firmly by his former counsel member. In response to Gonzales'
resignation an irritated Bush replied, "Implicit in your questions is that Al Gonzalez did something worng. I haven't seen Congress say he's done
anything wrong."
Members of congress vow to clean up the mess left behind by Gonzales as quickly as possible by finding a respectable replacement.
