Colin Cowherd

Last Thursday, April 5, on Colin Cowherd's radio show, The Herd, Colin was debating with listeners about why he didn't provide more coverage about Eddie Robinson's death. His simple response was because his listeners wouldn't have found it interesting. He then said something that was very thought provoking: "I'm not a news guy. Not a journalist. The network doesn't want me to tell you that, but Chris Berman's not either. Dick Vitale? Me? We're not journalists."

After hearing this, I began to question whether or not I am in the right major. I aspire to be like the Colin Cowherd's and Dick Vitale's of the world. What does everyone think of the comments Cowherd made? For someone who dreams of having a show like Cowherd's, should I be in a different major?

Tim Burgess:

I have also struggled with the fine line between sports journalist, sports entertainer and the area in between known as "talking-head." I'm not a big fan of Cowherd, personally, but I think he has an interesting point. The Herd, The Dan Patrick Show, The Rome Show, Mike and Mike in the Morning, and so on and so forth really aren't about getting the news at all. Anyone who likes sports enough to listen to these daytime shows is gaining very little new information, and is really just about interesting commentary. I think Cowherd is correct in saying that his listeners may not have been interested in coverage on Robinson's passing. What exactly was Cowherd going to say? Anything that would really be entertaining was sure to be controversial, so it's probably not a bad idea that he passed on the subject.
On the topic of whether or not you're in the right major, if you're not I'm not either since we seem to have the same career goal. As far as I know, there isn't a sports entertainment major, and there is a journalism class called "opinion and commentary" so I think we'll be just fine.
