Pandora.com: Music Genome Project

Pandora.com is a server that allows you to search for music and receive in return an online music station that plays that artists music along with other music from artists that sound similar to your search. This creative bridge between the artist and the listener defies what we have seen thus far on the Internet in terms of music. Since it's start in 2000, it was meant to be the most “comprehensive music analysis ever” said Tim Westergren, Founder of Pandora.com.

There were genes created for artists and songs, which were broken down into specific detail such as melody, harmony, instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and vocals. These specific attributes segregate between what will play based on what type of music you base your search or “station”. Westergren goes on to say “It’s not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records – it’s about what each individual song sounds like”.

Since the beginning of the Webpage, over 10,000 artists songs have been heard and evaluated to create this music lovers paradise. Each day new tracks are heard and analyzed to create a never-ending connection between the listener and new music as it is created daily. Each track is analyzed for an average of 20-30 minutes apiece. The analyses include up to 400 attributes for each and are evaluated by fifty musician-analysts.

Once you’re set up, you enter either an artist or song and your first station is complete. You may have up to 100 of these stations; each including the option to edit or delete anything you want. It searches the monstrous database that is filled with albums from popular musicians signed and unsigned over nearly the past decade.

It’s basically a custom DJ Website that does everything for you and exposes you to a wide variety of new music in the process. Once you are listening to your station it will go through a series of songs and you may rate them good or bad and also add them to your favorites. There are also options for the artists to have links directly to purchase their album on either iTunes or Amazon.com. Another feature on the site is you can find out why each song was put into your radio station based on its particular attributes. This not only informs the user of why they are similar sounds, but also gives a better understanding of music language and creation.

The potential impact of this site on the music industry is un-imaginable based on its wide variety of capability and the vast amount of opportunity to expand as the industry itself expands. This Website is something that has greatly influenced and impacted me as a music lover and also as a musician. This site is for anybody and everybody to be exposed to more music and a whole new aspect of music most people don’t know about.
